It is thought to have originated around 3000BC

Yoga & Happiness

“I’m not sure who said, “Happiness is an inside job,” but it’s a great thing to remember as a yogi. According to yoga philosophy, santosha, which means contentment, is a form of self-discipline. In other words, happiness is a skill and practice. Happier people do not have easier lives, with less hard work, grief, divorce, or financial strain than the rest of us. They’re simply more grateful for what they have and choose to be conscious of their contentment more often.”

This quote is from a Yoga teacher in America. What she is saying about self discipline is true but the happiness drawn from yoga is more likely to be that from the production of hormones like oxytocin and the reduction of hormones like cortisol – the stress hormone. Yoga poses combined with deep breathing facilitate deep relaxation that combats stress and make you happy. When practiced properly Yoga can make you a lot happier as it reduces your blood pressure and cortisol, the stress hormone.
