The Age of Un-enlightenment is an artist book/publication highlighting the issue of surveillance, ignorance and deceit caused by the paradigm shift of social media and psychographic data analysis – targeted advertising and the human contribution to the matter. As explored within my dissertation “To what extent does Psychographic Data Analysis harm political autonomy? and analysisContinue reading “500 word FMP Summary”
Again I had to take these on my iPhone, I took them outside and the lighting was much better.
These were unfortunately taken on my phone as I left my camera in London and I won’t be going back down until after the deadline. The pictures don’t do it justice but I am happy with have it ended up looked. Printed on newsprint – from the newspaper club.
Frequent use of the eye to show the surveillance, inferred and blatant messaging and a continuous nod to the human input and interaction – whether that’s intentional or not into this new age of un-enlightenment.
Riso Experiments: I tried to make my drawing look like they were risograph printed in photoshop as the fact of actually getting my project printed might not happen. I don’t think it looked great so decided against taking it further. Deciding on using sole hand drawn illustration: I love the look of the hand drawnContinue reading “More Layout Experimentation + Risograph Experimentation + Deciding to go full hand drawn.”
My first layout experimentation. FEEDBACK My feed back was mostly positive but David and my group said that there was too much going on with the illustrations – too many different styles causing it to become disjointed. I added in a quick hand drawn sketch in one of the layouts as I had’nt finished theContinue reading “Layout Experimentation + Feedback”
Size: tabloid newspaper size Binding: folded – no staples Flat Plans: rough sketches of possible layouts. Typography: After doing some experimentations I chose Whitman Display and Acumin Pro as my main typefaces. Whitman as it seems quite serious and formal which I quite like seeing as this is a serious subject Im talking about –Continue reading “Print Design Plan”
I really like the use of eyes and I think it’s really simple in showing the surveillance aspect and also the human aspect of it. I used dots and I envision my end product being riso printed as I really enjoy the idea of talking about a tech/societal shift within a medium that was oneContinue reading “Experimentation with illustration”
Medium is the Message – designed by Quentin Fiore He is noted especially by his designs of the 1960s, where he mixed text and images, different sizes of type and other unconventional devices to create dynamic pages that reflected the tumultuous spirit of the time. I love love love the simplicity of minimal text, whiteContinue reading “More Research”
The Age of Un-enlightenment is an artist book highlighting the culture of surveillance, ignorance and deceit caused by the paradigm shift of social media and psychographic data analysis – targeted advertising. with the help of my brother and previous research I wrote a short piece on what my project is all about. The Age of Enlightenment was characterised by the rise of the scientific method, rational thought and scepticism; There was a belief that this would set us free from ignorance and irrationality. However, we areContinue reading “The Age Of Un-enlightenment”
I went back and highlighted each quote and paragraph I want to use within this project. I then also broke what I wanted to include again further seen in the first image. I then wrote down everything that was in my head concerning what I wanted to say and who to. Research: Marshall McLuhan –Continue reading “Taking steps back and re thinking.”
I feel like I’ve hit a wall and my project feels stagnant. It’s all over the place and nothing really makes sense. I’m not really happy with any of my experiments. I feel like I need to take a step back so I can really get my head around this project. My concentration and motivationContinue reading “Hit A Wall”
I don’t know what this was – mostly a brain fart that makes no sense Attempted humour but didn’t feel like it was working. abstraction?
In my first tutorial I discussed with David the differing ways of visualising the concepts I had chosen to go with. We discussed how it was important to balance the tone as the content of my diss is quite bleak and that creating equally as bleak visuals would make it just depressing and less accessible.Continue reading “How to visualise a bleak concept?”
I started my research process by breaking down my dissertation into key points/themes discussed within it. my main interest is actual the general undertone surrounding the coercive control from modern tech through Surveillance Capitalism. “Surveillance capitalism is a new term addressing the process of commodifying personal data with the core purpose of profit making. Since personal data can beContinue reading “Initial Research (contextual)”
FINAL DISS TITLE: To what extent does Psychographic Data Analysis harm political autonomy? and analysis on the designer’s impact. Thinking: I was inspired to write my dissertation off the back of my second year 3000 word essay “Does design play a significant role in the normalisation of violence within our society?” – within this essayContinue reading “Dissertation”
My original FMP idea was to create a hardback book exploring grief – following my experience of losing my mum at 16 to cancer but also other peoples experiences of losing a loved one. I thought about making it specific to losing someone from cancer as there are differences in those situations as opposed toContinue reading “FMP – Designed Dissertation”
https://www.newspaperclub.com I decided to print on newsprint as I used it for my 2nd year FMP and I thought it looked amazing and gave a lovely texture and tactile feel to my work. Newsprint is also recycle able and I love that. I’m very much interested in sustainability. I am happy with how my printContinue reading “Printed Outcome”
I prefer the top one, I feel it works a lot better. The bottom one feels like there’s bits missing.
I used this illustration as I thought it looked quite fortune teller-ish, I originally did this illustration as a personal project, inspired by traditional tattoos, my old sketch books are full of these style drawings I did when I was younger so my personal project was to refresh these. I usually use photography within myContinue reading “Typeface & Illustration”
@renaissance_man I spent so long trying to find the identity of this designer but I failed miserably. However, I absolutely love this designers style, its fun, humorous, very stylised and is constantly up to date with internet culture and my generations’ humour. If they’re not of my generation I’ll eat my hat. They transfer their designs toContinue reading “RESEARCH: Iamhere”
@harry_vincent I love the simplicity of this poster design. The typeface is lovely although the spacing is quite tight together, some letters are touching. I’m not sure I’d like that within my own design but it doesn’t look bad on this piece to be fair.I think the illustration is quietly clever with how it works inContinue reading “RESEARCH: Harry Vincent”
@darkartscoffee @hideoutcoffeecompany I discovered these two coffee shop brands via instagram. Dark Arts is based in Hackney and Japan. Hideout is based in Portsmouth. They both have a similar branding style – both of which I absolutely love. They both use a heavy weighted serif typeface – it gives me an old school vibe which isContinue reading “RESEARCH: Dark Arts Coffee, Hideout Coffee.”
My initial thoughts when given the brief for this project were to do something I’m really interested in. I’d say my personal practice is editorial, layout and print work based, so I wanted to do something along those lines. I found it hard to find inspiration at first so I thought I’d use my currentContinue reading “I AM HERE/WE ARE HERE Initial Thoughts”
